TUCSON, November 25, UPI)–U.S. firefighters work injury and death rates among the highest but firefighters at greater risk of injury during exercise, researchers say.
Gerald s. Poplin University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health in Tucson, and colleagues at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, see the data for the injury while at work from 2004 to 2009 for 21 fire stations serving Tucson.
650 Employees including firemen, medics, engineers, Inspectors, and battalion chief-the average age of 41 and all but 5 per cent were men, Poplin said.
Study published in the journal Injury Prevention, found the average annual incidence of injuries new 17.7 per 100 employees–most in 30s and 40s-and injury while exercising with a third of the total accounted for, while the 20 injuries sustained during a training simulation exercises.
An additional 17 per cent due to the transport of patients, and while 20 injuries occur during Fire Department–but a larger proportion of injury is more serious, the study said.
